Preparation

These star-topped, puff-pastry trees will look festive on your buffet table – and the combination of strong cheddar and chutney is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6 and line two baking trays with baking paper. Unroll the pastry and position so the longer edge is facing you. Cut the pastry in half vertically and spread the chutney over one side. Grate 75g of the cheese and sprinkle this over the chutney. Place the other half of the pastry over the filled side and lightly roll to seal. Cut into 10 vertical strips, each around 1.5cm wide.

  2. Take each pastry strip and fold it in on itself, getting smaller as you go, until you have a tree shape. Push a wooden skewer through the middle to secure the shape and transfer to the baking tray. Repeat with the remaining strips.

  3. Lightly beat the egg, then brush the trees with it. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes, or until puffed up and golden. Set aside to cool slightly.

  4. Cut the remaining cheese into chunky slices, then cut out 10 stars, using a star cutter or by hand. Position a cheese star on the top of each skewer and serve.
